Abstract

What’s Holding Back Telecom — and What’s Next

This talk unpacks why 5G has underdelivered despite the hype, and why Open RAN and legacy testing processes aren’t silver bullets. We’ll explore how telecom’s future is being shaped by three major forces:

Openness: Beyond Open RAN — open standards, testing, and software.

Cloud-Native: Not just Kubernetes. Telecom-specific frameworks like Nephio are redefining automation.

AI: Powering smart networks — from failure prediction to using idle base stations for AI workloads.

We’ll challenge assumptions like “Open RAN will fix everything” and “Cloud-native means Kubernetes,” and show how testing telecom systems is now possible on a laptop.

Ultimately, telecom is evolving — from hardware to software, from manual to autonomous. If you’re tracking the future of AI, networks, or cloud, this session will change how you see the industry.
