In this talk, I will share my experiences in the open-source firmware field, beginning with my journey in the EDK II community. EDK II is an open-source implementation of UEFI firmware, with contributors from around the world, including hardware vendors, device manufacturers, and individual developers interested in firmware technology. I will explain how I started as a beginner by reading source code, fixing minor issues, and participating in discussion threads. Step by step, I became a technical contributor, integrated into the community, collaborated with global open-source developers, and eventually had the opportunity to speak at FOSDEM, the largest open-source conference in Europe.
Through this talk, I hope to give aspiring developers who want to participate in large-scale open-source projects a clearer idea of how to get started. I also want to highlight that being part of an open-source community is not only about writing code. It is also a journey of personal growth and expanding one’s global perspective. I aim to encourage more developers from Taiwan to engage with the international open-source community and enhance their global impact.
