Is open source merely a technical choice, or can it become a core business strategy? This session explores how HL7 FHIR — an open standard for health information exchange — became the foundation for a health IT company’s transformation journey, using open source culture as a strategic asset rather than an afterthought.
The talk will cover two key dimensions of this transformation:
- Internal Policies: How we implemented incentive structures for open source contribution, integrated open standards like FHIR into our development processes, and empowered our team to shift from consuming to contributing to open source.
- External Strategy: How we built competitive products and platform services using FHIR and open source tools, while expanding influence through community engagement, education, and participation in public standards.
This talk shares real-world practices from a heavily regulated and traditionally conservative industry, showcasing how social enterprise principles and open collaboration can support not only sustainable development — but sustainable business.
