For this reason many developers fail to tell users that their work is built upon free/open source software. As a result ordinary people are not aware of the widespread usage of free/open operating systems, development tools and components. The people who work on these projects end up doing so without receiving the social recognition they rightly deserve.
Why is free software so often of better quality than proprietary counterparts? This is because its development system encourages cooperation and education of members. This effect is best explained with the philosophy of Confucius and Mencius. Abstaining from placing too much power upon self, known as 辞譲 is an important keyword here.
Why do computer engineers call the highly talented member among themselves “hacker”? This can be explained by a phrase from Zhuang Zi
荘子.
I would like to speak on these issues so that people both within and outside of the computer industry can form a better idea of industry
and technology realities.
